What do miniaturists mean when they talk about "scales"?
To help create the impression of a realistic miniature world, most miniaturists try to collect items that fit, proportionally, with everything else in the scene. For example, a chair should not tower over a table (unless that's the intended effect!).
Measurement scales make it much easier to gauge proportions. The most popular dollhouse scales are:
1 inch to 1 foot (also called 1/12th scale)
1/2 inch to 1 foot (also called half scale or 1/24th)
1/4 inch to 1 foot (also called quarter scale or 1/48th; the same
as "O scale" in railroading)
In 1 inch to 1 foot scale, a 6-inch doll would represent a person that is 6 feet tall. We've prepared a handy chart to help with the math.
